Rifle Hunting

De Wet African Safaris offers high quality trophy rifle hunts in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, on private owned properties. These well managed properties are considered by many to be one of the greatest hunting grounds in the world.

Rifle hunting is conducted on foot (spot-and-stalk). Herds will be located by driving around on the hunting area till some game are spotted or alternately looking for fresh tracks. From there a stalk is initiated to get within shooting range. Shot distances range from between 50 yards and 200 yards. We make use of shooting sticks so make sure to get some practice in before your hunt.

Clients always ask me what type of rifle and caliber they should bring to Africa. My advice is always, bring the rifle that you are most comfortable shooting with, shot placement and premium quality bullets are more important than caliber choice. For plains game, I recommend any caliber between 270 and 375. However for dangerous game the minimum requirement by law is no caliber smaller than 375H&H. We recommend using premium quality soft point ammunition like Swift A-frame, Woodleigh, Norma or Barnes. For elephant and hippo it is advisable to use heavy caliber solid ammunition. When hunting dangerous game a good quality low powered variable scope of 1.5 – 6 x 25 power. We recommend a higher powered scope of between 3 – 9 x 40 magnification for plains game.

When transporting your rifle it should be transported on the airline and on any major road in a solid, lockable, hard case. Whilst travelling between hunting areas or on the back of the hunting vehicle we recommend that you bring a soft padded rifle bag.

Bow Hunting

At De Wet African Safaris we offer two different methods of bow hunting. Namely, enclosed permanently build in ground / elevated blinds which allows the hunter to harvest his chosen quality animal over a watering hole. This is known to be the most common yet very successful way, where the shooting distance varies between 15 to 30 yards. We also make use of pop-up blinds, giving the hunter a full 270º view of the surrounded area. All our concessions have an abundance of game, making South Africa a bow hunting paradise.

Weather permitting, there is always the option to do spot and stalk bow hunting. Not the most successful way of bow hunting, but it is always rewarding when you manage to harvest one of these wary animals on foot. Shooting distance are a bit further usually with shots ranging from 40 to 60 yards, make sure to get enough practice in if this is one of the methods you would prefer.

The best period of time to do a spot and stalk hunt is from March to June, that is when the bush is at its peak after our rain season with enough cover to make sure you get your perfect shot!
